Colophon
In publishing, a colophon describes details of the production of a book. This information generally includes the typefaces used, and often the names of their designers; the paper, ink and details of the binding materials and methods may also receive mention. In the case of technical books, a colophon may specify the software used to prepare the text and diagrams for publication. Detailed colophons are a characteristic feature of limited edition and private press printing.
If a book has a colophon, it may appear either on the same page as the copyright information, or at the back of the volume. In early printed books the colophon follows the explicit, the final words of the text. A printer’s or publisher’s device on the title page or spine is sometimes loosely called the colophon.
The term “colophon” derives from the Late Latin colophon, from the Greek word for “summit”, “top”, or “finishing.” It should not be confused with Colophon, an ancient city in Asia Minor, the name of which derives from the Latin colophonium, meaning “colophony”, or rosin.

In an effort to combat comment and spam and to make your visit here as enjoyable as possible, we’ve implemented some plugins that will hopefully do the job. So, in no particular order…
- Bad Behavior
- This is an anti-spam plugin that analyzes bot behavior and nips it in the bud before it ever lands in your comment box. This plugin was installed on 07-09-2005 so let’s see how many online casino and Texas hold ‘em comments we DON’T SEE here tomorrow!
- CG-QuickPHP
- This plugin is a MUST HAVE if you plan to run PHP code on your WP Pages.
- Laughing Lizard’s Backup/Restore
- If you don’t install a single blessed plugin, install this one. It’s great! From your WP console, without having to fiddle with MySQP or PHPMyAdmin, you can generate a *.sql text file and backup your entire site. (And this backs up the ENTIRE site, even the private areas above your public_html folder. And since it backs up the entire site into a /backup directory on your server, you would be wise to download that rather large backup file to your hard drive unless you have gobs of server space.) Or take advantage of the generous space that GMail account holders have and opt to have the backup file mailed to your GMail account!
- WP-Contact Form
- This plugin was developed by Ryan Duff. It can be used on WP Pages or Posts to insert a contact form. The form is completely customizable through the WP Dashboard. In fact, Joni hacked the file to add another field, the “Phone:” field so that web design clients have a way of providing us with their telephone number if desired. See the plugin at work on our Contact link (which is actually a WordPress Page) elsewhere on the site.
- Obfuscate E-Mail
- This clever plugin was developed by Coffee2Code’s Scott Reilly. It does exactly what its name implies: It obfuscates e-mail addresses in text and links via random hex and ASCII code substitution while retaining the appearance and functionality of hyperlinks. In the browser, the links look and behave the same. Mailto links activate your email program. Yet, if you view the source code, you will see strings of hex code. Thus, bots and spiders can’t harvest the email addresses found there.
- Link Manager
- This handy plugin was developed by Owen Winkler at the behest of WP Support maven Lorelle (thank you!). You can see it at work in the “Elsewhere” section on our Support Page. Very very cool plugin!
- Download Manager
- This plugin was developed by Kaf Oseo. Thanks to this plugin, we can track downloads from this site, require visitors to register (and even assign a minimum user level above which downloads can occur) before downloading, or let any and all download. Linking your file to Download Manager is as easy as remembering a couple of keystrokes:
/?dl=[yourfilename]. We are looking forward to getting a lot of mileage out of this excellent plugin.
